Please take a moment to remember those who have died for our Country and also thank those who are currently serving in our Armed Forces.

"It is the soldier, not the reporter,
Who has given us freedom of the press.
It is the soldier, not the poet,
Who has given us freedom of speech.
It is the soldier, Who salutes the flag,
Who serves beneath the flag,
And whose coffin is draped by the flag,
Who allows the protester to burn the flag."

-- Father Denis Edward O'Brien USMC

Choking back tears, Christian Golczynski accepted the flag from his father's casket. Photographer Aaron Thompson described this moment as "the most emotionally moving event I may have ever witnessed and may ever witness in my life." (The Daily News Journal)

Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day

Memorial Day was officially proclaimed on May 5th 1868 by
General John Logan and was first observed on May 30th 1868 .

The first state to officially recognize Memorial Day was
New York in 1873.

Since the late 50's on the Thursday before Memorial Day, the 3rd U.S. Infantry places small American Flags on each gravestone at Arlington National Cemetery .
They then patrol 24 hours a day during the weekend to ensure that each flag remains standing.
